You are right lots of networks to join online. Focus on where people in your area of expertise are.

ResearchGate is strong in the sciences and engineering. Academia.edu is a more general network of academics, like a Facebook for academics. While others like Mendeley are more limited and might not be worthwhile at all.

Don’t underestimate LinkedIn or Facebook groups as well.

Facebook and LinkedIn are not even mentioned. It is hard to know which one is worthwhile on a professional level to advance a career.
